It isn’t easy to even know where to begin to thank someone for giving you your life back. I was diagnosed with advanced-stage III estrogen positive, HER2 negative breast cancer early in 2011. After going through many surgeries (8), five months of chemo, and 1 ½ month of radiation, I felt far from myself. The lat flap had left me with very painful and severe capsular contracture that made my breast feel like it was full of rocks, and big rocks at that. Have you ever had a day where you were so uncomfortable that you could not wait to get home to take your bra off? Take painful shoes off? Or, take too tight of jeans off? That’s what I can equate the constant discomfort with, yet there was nothing I could take off to alleviate the pain.
Two wonderful men entered into my life, Dr. Kocak and Dr. Tiwari. Over nine hours of dedicated, arduous, and difficult surgery, these two amazing microvascular surgeons meticulously removed my troubled implants and performed a bilateral DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap and lymph node transfer on me. I am so incredibly blessed to have been introduced to these highly skilled surgeons capable of performing this type of surgery. I would describe their surgical abilities as meticulous, masterful, and artistic. I would describe their character as upstanding, caring, kind, and uplifting. Their sense of humor will be endearing not just to you but to your family and loved ones as well.
I now have comfort with my body. I no longer have some foreign material (implants) in my body for it to reject. It’s all me, and it feels great! Had I been aware of this option and its result, there is no doubt that I would have chosen this procedure initially. As I heal from my subsequent reconstruction surgery following the DIEP flap, I am delighted with the physical result, ecstatic with the comfort I now have, and overjoyed with the improved lymphatic function. The gratitude I feel for these two amazing men leaves me speechless. Bless them and bless their mission.
