Liposuction Techniques

Dry Liposuction

The cannula is inserted directly into the target areas to remove excess fat without the use of local anesthesia.

Wet Liposuction

A solution that restricts capillary activity is first injected into the target area. Once the solution has taken effect, the fat is suctioned out with cannulas.

Super Wet Liposuction

The same solution used in wet liposuction is injected into areas of fat at twice the normal volume.

Tumescent Liposuction

A mixture of saltwater, local anesthesia, and epinephrine is administered to large deposits of fat. This causes blood vessels to constrict and fat cells to swell, making fat extraction much easier to perform.

Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction (UAL)

Specialized cannulas that emit ultrasound are used to liquefy body fat. The ultrasound penetrates the skin to break down sections of fat that are too deep for normal cannulas to remove. UAL also has a tightening effect on loose skin.

VASER Liposuction

VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) is a specific type of UAL that uses a cannula that emits ultrasound all around the target area.

Power-assisted Liposuction (PAL)

The PAL machine is used to vibrate the cannula. The motion breaks down fat as it is removed, making it an efficient technique for targeting dense deposits of adipose tissue.

Water-assisted Liposuction

The cannula used in this procedure continuously delivers tumescent fluid during liposuction instead of before. It is a more controllable method of tumescent delivery, as only fat cells that can be reached by your surgeon will be swollen and extracted.

Laser Liposuction

The laser heats excess fat and turns it into an easy-aspirated liquid. Additionally, the heat stimulates collagen growth while rejuvenating the skin. Midwest Breast & Aesthetic Surgery offers several Laser Liposuction procedures:

  • SmartLipo™
  • Cool Lipo
  • ProLipo PLUS, by
  • Sciton™
  • LipoLite, by Syneron
  • LipoControl, by Osyris Medical

The Liposuction Procedure

In Ohio, liposuction is performed under general anesthesia. However, local anesthesia can be used, depending on the chosen technique.

Liposuction typically takes 1 – 3 hours to complete. A surgical pen will be used to mark the appropriate entry areas. These points will be used for the breakdown and extraction of excess fat in the body. The entry points are covered with medical bandages to facilitate healing.

Recovery

You will be taken to a private recovery room after your operation with a compression garment, which must be worn for 2 – 3 weeks to help your skin adhere to your new shape. Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, and you may return home after obtaining clearance from your doctor.

Your surgeon may prescribe oral or topical painkillers to control any discomfort, bruising, and swelling. Recovery from liposuction is short, and you may return to work and resume normal activities such as full-body showers, driving, and household chores within 4 – 7 days.

However, it can take between 1 – 2 months before you can engage in regular exercise and other strenuous activities.

Results

Scars should be expected where the cannulas used to suction targeted fat are inserted. These scars are small, ranging from 4-to-10mm in size, and fade, some into an almost unnoticeable blemish, when healed. Once results settle, you will be left with a shapely and more-defined figure that must be maintained through diet and exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions About Liposuction

Can liposuction be combined with other plastic surgeries?

Liposuction can be done as a stand-alone surgery for subtle contour alterations or combined with other procedures like breast augmentations, tummy tucks, and Mommy Makeovers for more dramatic body contouring results.

How much fat can be removed during liposuction?

We often extract 5 – 7 liters of fat in healthy patients who weight over 190 lbs. The amount is significantly lower for patients who weight between 100 – 110 lbs.

Can you have liposuction twice?

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells, so results should be permanent with consistent diet and exercise. Two or three sessions of liposuction are necessary for cases that require a large amount of fat to be removed. Pregnancy can also significantly change the body’s biology, and returning to a postpartum body may require another round of liposuction.

Is it easier to lose weight after liposuction?

Weight is not easily gained due to the removal of adipose in the areas of the body that had undergone liposuction. However, future weight gain will affect areas untouched by surgery. So it is important to exercise and maintain active control of your weight.
