ABPS Annual Meeting 2014

| October 15, 2014 August 2, 2023 | |

Dr Kocak and Dr Tiwari at Plastic Surgery The Meeting 2014 in ChicagoDr. Tiwari and I just spent the last few days attending the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Board of Plastic Surgeons in Chicago. This event is one of the biggest gatherings of board-certified plastic surgeons that takes place each year. With over 2000 people attending, it’s the ideal place to catch up with old colleagues, meet new ones, and hear talks from people who are leaders in their specialties. We are proud to share that we were among these leaders asked to present at the meeting.

Dr. Tiwari presented some of his amazing work with vascularized lymph node transfer and served on a panel discussing lymph node transfer in the breast cancer patient. This panel was made up of an elite few in the field and guided an interactive discussion about this new and emerging surgical sub-specialty. The energetic discussion at this session clearly indicated that lymph node transfer and the surgical management of lymphedema after breast cancer treatment attract growing attention and show very promising results.

As for me, I had a great opportunity to present an invention that seeks to develop highly personalized lines of skincare products for people who are undergoing cosmetic liposuction or body contouring procedures such as a tummy tuck at the ASPS Shark Tank Competition. We were very excited that our technology was one of the five that were selected to be presented to their panel of accomplished entrepreneurs. Hopefully, we can keep the momentum behind this unique idea to make it available to people soon.

I have also to highlight the committees on which we serve. By volunteering our time and effort to these committees, we help keep the ASPS moving toward its goals and accomplishing its missions. I am particularly proud of serving on the Researcher Education Committee, which is dedicated to developing educational materials and opportunities for ASPS members and residents who are candidate members. At this meeting, we announced the completion of an online Grant Writing Module, which is now available to all ASPS members through the online Plastic Surgery Education Network (PSEN). This module will be used by all individuals who seek to submit a grant application to the Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF) and can also be used by those seeking funding from other sources.

Finally, the ASPS has put a great deal of energy and resources into educating its members and the public, and patients. They will start another major campaign to educate the public about the importance and value of seeking a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. I’ve written about this in a previous blog, which can be found here. Look for these educational messages on TV, online, and at the movies soon. After our sneak peeks, all I can say is that they are both moving and informative.

Look for another update when we get back from our national meeting next year! Thanks for reading.
