Aesthetic Flat Closure
Surgery in Ohio
Choosing to remain flat after a mastectomy is a deeply personal decision. At Midwest Breast & Aesthetic Surgery, we approach aesthetic flat closure with the same surgical precision, thoughtful planning, and compassionate care we bring to any breast reconstruction procedure.
What Is Aesthetic Flat Closure?
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for an Aesthetic Flat Closure?
Aesthetic flat closure may be an option for women who have undergone or are planning a mastectomy and do not wish to have breast reconstruction. It may also be considered by patients who have had a previous reconstruction and now wish to transition to a flat chest.
Your surgeon will evaluate your medical history, previous surgeries, skin and tissue quality, and overall health to determine the safest approach for achieving your desired result.
Good Candidates for Aesthetic Flat Closure
You are considering prophylactic mastectomy because of an elevated breast cancer risk
You prefer a flat chest
You have experienced an unsatisfactory previous flat closure and desire revision
You are undergoing or have completed a mastectomy
You want to address excess skin or tissue following mastectomy
Your goals and expectations are an important part of determining the right surgical plan.
Benefits of Aesthetic Flat Closure
A smooth, balanced chest contour following mastectomy
Freedom from breast implants and reconstruction-related procedures
Greater comfort during daily activities and exercise
No need for bras or breast prostheses, if you choose not to use them
A sense of confidence and ownership over your post-mastectomy body
A well-planned flat closure creates a chest contour that feels intentional, comfortable, and aligned with how you want to live.
The Aesthetic Flat Closure Procedure
Every flat closure is planned around the patient’s existing chest anatomy and mastectomy. The goal is to remove excess tissue and carefully shape the remaining skin and soft tissue for a smooth, even contour.
Contouring
the Chest
Every flat closure is planned around the patient's existing chest anatomy and mastectomy. The goal is to remove excess tissue and carefully shape the remaining skin and soft tissue for a smooth, even contour.
Removing Excess
Skin and Tissue
Remaining skin and soft tissue are carefully excised and shaped to minimize folds, fullness, or irregularities.
Creating a
Balanced Closure
The skin is precisely positioned and closed to create a smooth chest contour. Absorbable sutures may be used, eliminating the need for routine suture removal.
Recovery Timeline
While patients may return home the same day, a 1–2 day hospital stay may be appropriate depending on your individual circumstances. Most patients gradually return to normal activities as swelling subsides and incisions heal.
First few days
Rest and limited activity while your incisions begin to heal. Follow your surgeon’s wound-care instructions.
Week 1
Follow-up care begins. Assistance with daily activities may be helpful during the early recovery period.
Weeks 1-2
Bruising, swelling, and soreness gradually improve. Some patients may begin returning to work depending on their recovery and occupation.
Weeks 2-4
Activity gradually increases, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided until your surgeon provides clearance.
Months 2-3
Swelling continues to resolve, scars mature, and the chest settles.
The initial chest contour is visible immediately after surgery, although swelling and other temporary changes can affect its appearance during early healing. As your body heals, the chest gradually settles into its final contour and scars continue to soften and mature.
Our goal is a smooth, intentional chest contour that feels right for you. While results are designed to be long-lasting, your appearance will naturally change with aging, weight fluctuations, and other factors.
