Skin Cancer
Reconstruction in Ohio
Removing skin cancer is the first step. Restoring comfort, function, and confidence comes next. At Midwest Breast & Aesthetic Surgery, our reconstructive surgeons create personalized repair plans that preserve natural facial features, protect delicate structures, and help your results blend as seamlessly as possible with your surrounding skin.
What Is Skin Cancer Reconstruction?
Skin cancer reconstruction is a specialized area of plastic and reconstructive surgery that repairs tissue after the removal of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, and other skin cancers. While the primary goal of skin cancer treatment is the complete removal of the malignancy, removing the cancer can leave significant tissue defects.
When these defects occur in highly visible or functionally critical areas, such as the nose, eyelids, lips, or ears, specialized reconstruction is required to rebuild the area and protect delicate anatomical structures.
Aesthetic
Integration
Aligns incisions along the natural borders and shadows of the face to minimize visible scarring
Functional
Restoration
Rebuilds essential structural support to preserve the normal function of delicate areas like the eyelids, lips, and nose
Personalized
Reconstruction
Uses advanced tissue rearrangement techniques to closely match the color, texture, and thickness of your surrounding skin
Is Skin Cancer Reconstruction Right for Me?
This procedure is suited for individuals who need to repair tissue following the excision of cutaneous malignancies.
Good Candidates for Skin Cancer Reconstruction
- You are preparing for or have recently undergone skin cancer removal.
- You have a resulting tissue defect in a visually sensitive or functionally vital area.
- You understand that scar maturation and tissue blending can change over time.
- You abstain from nicotine, as smoking impairs tissue healing.
How It Works
Many skin cancer reconstructions are coordinated with your dermatologist or Mohs surgeon, allowing reconstruction to begin once the cancer has been fully removed and clear margins are confirmed.
01
Surgical Planning
Your surgeon evaluates the defect's size, depth, and location to determine the safest reconstructive strategy.
02
Tissue Restoration
Depending on your needs, the wound may be closed directly, reconstructed with nearby tissue, or rebuilt using healthy skin from another area.
03
Layered Reconstruction
Deeper support structures are restored when necessary to preserve function and maintain natural facial contours.
04
Meticulous Closure
Incisions are carefully positioned along natural skin lines whenever possible to support discreet scar healing.
Types of Skin Cancer Reconstruction
Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate reconstructive technique based on the size, depth, location, and functional needs of the treated area.
Primary Closure
How it works: Brings the wound edges together directly using layered sutures
Best for: Small defects with enough surrounding skin for a tension-free closure
Skin Grafting
How it works: Transfers healthy skin from a discreet donor site (such as in front of the ear or along the collarbone) to cover the wound
Best for: Shallow defects where local tissue cannot be stretched
Regional or Distant Flaps
How it works: Uses tissue from a nearby area, such as the forehead, to rebuild larger defects
Best for: Extensive defects where substantial structural support and tissue volume are required to restore natural function
Mohs Reconstruction
How it works: Rebuilds the surgical wound after Mohs skin cancer surgery
Best for: Patients who have undergone Mohs surgery for skin cancer and need reconstruction
Recovery Timeline
Weeks 1–2
Expect to stay in the hospital for 3 to 4 days for monitoring.
Weeks 3–6
The repaired tissue and incisions may appear pink, firm, or slightly raised. This active remodeling phase is normal.
Months 3–6
Reconstructed tissue begins to soften and blend. Scar massage with silicone may be introduced.
Months 12–18
Complete biological maturation. The tissue reaches its final, flattened, and faded appearance. Ongoing UV protection is vital to maintain the aesthetic result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the reconstruction happen on the same day as the skin cancer removal?
In many cases, yes. The procedure is carefully coordinated so that once your Mohs surgeon confirms the cancer is entirely removed, the reconstructive phase begins on the same day. In certain complex situations, a short delay of a few days may be recommended to allow the wound bed to settle or await final pathology.
Will my insurance cover skin cancer reconstruction?
Because the procedure repairs a defect caused by removing the confirmed malignancy and aims to restore bodily function, it is generally considered medically necessary rather than elective cosmetic surgery. Most health insurance plans provide coverage, though specific benefits vary by policy.
Will the scar be noticeable?
While any surgical incision results in a scar, reconstructive techniques are specifically designed to minimize visibility. By hiding incisions within the natural folds and borders of your facial subunits, the scar becomes significantly less noticeable as it matures and fades over the first 12 to 18 months.
Will I need more than one procedure?
Many patients achieve excellent results with a single reconstruction. Larger or more complex defects—particularly those involving the nose, eyelids, or ears—may require staged reconstruction or a later refinement procedure.
Will the reconstructed area look exactly like it did before?
The goal is to restore the most natural appearance and function possible while preserving your unique facial features. Your surgeon will discuss what is realistically achievable based on the size and location of your reconstruction.
